Russia to stop anonymous surfing for gambling sites

Russia will look at ways of preventing Internet users from surfing anonymously to access prohibited websites, which include poker networks.

During an annual technology conference, Russia’s Communications Chairman Leonid Levin urged Parliament to stop users from covertly accessing sites that are on the federal blacklist.

The list includes illicit content such as child pornography, drug use and ways to self-harm. However the list has since expanded to include anything deemed forbidden such as YouTube, certain blog sites and poker networks, including PokerStars.

Savvy poker fans have been able up to now been to circumvent restrictions through Virtual Private Networks and Tor software, which uses a highly sophisticated encryption system that makes tracking IP addresses virtually impossible.
