Samoa casinos an 'experiment'

Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi called the issuance of casino licenses to  locally owned Aggie Grey’s Reef Resort and to Chengdu Exhibition and Tourism Group, a Chinese company, an experiment. "If the casino does not produce the desired result then we just fold [them] up," he said. ETG's plans for a large resort complemented by a golf course, shopping mall and charter flights from China have been controversial on the island, with even Catholic leaders divided over the proposal. ETG's plans for another such resort on the Micronesian island of Yap are also facing local opposition. Locals are to be barred from the Samoa casinos.
