Sarawak police make headway in gambling crackdown

Over 230 recreational clubs and family entertainment centres have been shut down by police in Sarawak after they were found to be functioning as gambling dens, local media reports.

"About 200 recreational clubs throughout Sarawak were registered with the Registrar of Societies have been told to close,” said State Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar.

"Another 34 business that are so-called family entertainment centres were shut down after police found gambling machines hidden inside.

Earlier this month, Dev pledged to intensify efforts to detain and remand illegal operators, noting that the advent of digital and online technology has made it easy for people to get access to illegal gaming.

"Police and local authorities are making good headway in the war against gambling in Sarawak," he said.
