Shifting casinos onshore to benefit industry

Delta Corp is supportive of the state government’s decision to shift casinos onshore, saying that it will provide more stability to its business.

On Monday, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced that all offshore or floating casinos would be required to shift to land-based operations within three years.

“This (land-based) concept of the government seeks to address all these concerns, whether valid or not,” said Delta Corp chairman Jaydev Mody to BloombergQuint in an email on Tuesday. Mody noted concerns for floating casinos include traffic on the Mandovi river, pollution issues and disturbance to fishing.

Mody said the decision would mean that the business would become more scalable. He said that Delta Corp is drawing up plans for how it will comply with the government’s directions as soon as the rules are framed and the Act is amended.
