Shikoku records 24.1 percent increase in foreign tourists in FY2017

The number of foreign tourists who visited the principal tourist sites of Shikoku island was over 460,000 people, a 24.1 percent jump over the previous fiscal year.

Among the various tourist-oriented facilities, the most impressive performance was turned in by  Creative Park Actland in Konan city, Kochi, which gained an overall 60 percent increase in tourists, according to information released by the Shikoku Transport and Tourism Bureau.

Shikoku’s overall performance among domestic and foreign tourists was less impressive. While Kochi and Kagawa gained 2.2 percent and 1.6 percent respectively, Ehime and Tokushima saw decreases of 2.2 percent and 8.5 percent.

At present, the only visible movement toward an IR bid within Shikoku is at Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, but the local political leaders have not yet embraced the concept proactively.
