The tragic shooting on Oct. 1 and lower hotel room supply caused a drop in the number of visitors to Las Vegas in 2017, according to preliminary numbers released by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, local media reports.
In his presentation to the board of directors, LVCVA chief of research Kevin Bagger said that Vegas saw a drop in visitors in the wake of the Oct. 1 shooting, while renovations to rooms and closure of smaller hotels in 2017 also contributed to a decline in visitor numbers.
Bagger noted that Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Harrah’s and the Linq all had rooms closed for renovation in 2017, but have now reopened.
A total of 42.2 million people visited the US casino hub in 2017, down 1.7 percent compared to 2016, he said.
However, Bagger noted that convention attendance broke an all time record, with 6.6 million visitors coming to Las Vegas for business, up 5.2 percent from 2016.
