Sihanoukville goes into lockdown

“No In and No Out” is the watchword in Sihanoukville as authorities grapple with a local Covid resurgence that has reached over a hundred people in recent days.

Under the order, only cargo and goods vehicles, ambulances, and security services are authorized to move around the zone.

However, Prime Minister Hun Sen has also urged trade and business activities to continue so as not to cripple the economy in Sihanoukville.

The local outbreak has been emerging in stages since February 20, with a Chinese guest at the Jin Bei Hotel serving as the original epicenter, as far as the authorities can tell.

Cambodia has so far escaped much of the worst of the global Covid pandemic, with less than a thousand recorded cases over the past year.

However, with dozens of small, local casinos and a dependence on foreign tourism, the gaming industry is struggling to cope.
