Singapore mulling group exclusions, opt-in system

Singapore’s National Council on Problem Gambling will look at the feasibility of allowing group applications for those wishing to exclude themselves from casinos, as well as a possible “opt-in” system, according to media reports.

The Minister for Social and Family Development, Chan Chun Sing, made the announcement in parliament following a request for an extension of the consolidated application for groups of local workers and religious organizations.

Singapore already charges locals a S$100 entrance fee for the island’s two casinos -- Genting Singapore’s Resorts World Sentosa and Las Vegas Sands’ Marina Bay Sands. 

A suggestion for an opt-in system for entry into the casinos here for Singaporeans is also being considered.

MP Denise Phua suggested that all Singaporeans be disallowed from entering the casino, unless they apply to enter it.

"It just should not be so easy that if you want to enter, you just go to the counter and pay up S$100," she said. "I think if it is something that is not encouraged, then why not opt everybody out as a natural exclusion. And then if you want to enter, you go and apply."
