Singapore starts China marketing push

Singapore has launched a marketing campaign to attract Chinese visitors to the island state amid a drop in tourism numbers.

Chinese travellers have been deterred by the ongoing mystery surrounding the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight 370 and the unrest in Thailand.

The 5 million yuan ($802,491) campaign will run through to October and will be jointly organized by airport operator Changi Airport Group (CAG), the Singapore Tourism Board and Chinese and Singaporean travel agencies.

The CAG said Changi handled 1.87 million passengers to and from China from January to May, a decline of 1.7 percent from the previous year. Overall, traveller numbers in the period were 21.95 million, 1.8 percent more than the corresponding period in 2013.

In May alone, passenger traffic to and from Thailand fell 17 percent, with Bangkok and Phuket traffic dropping by 24 percent and 7 percent respectively.
