SJM Holdings to pay two-month bonus

SJM Holdings will pay staff earning less than MOP 20,000 ($2,500), a bonus of two months’ salary, while those earning more will receive 1.5 months, local media reported, citing gaming union Forefront of Macau Gaming.

The union cited an internal notice circulated to employees.

This bonus scheme is called “living subsidies” by the operator and is divided into “new year subsidies” and “summer subsidies”. According to the notice, “new year subsidies” have been distributed to SJM workers on January 1 while summer subsidies will only be issued on July 1 this year.

SJM is retaining bonuses despite slumping revenue in Macau and the high cost of local labor. With unemployment almost non-existent in the territory, labor is one of the highest costs for local operators.
