SkyCity making progress on Convention Center

SkyCity’s CEO announced that it it making good progress with the government towards finalizing the preliminary design of the New Zealand International Convention Centre.

Nigel Morrison said the company and the Crown are in the process of agreeing to a final design of the development, following an 11-week review of the original design. The review was undertaken following confirmation from the Government that it would not be making any financial contribution to the cost of the NZICC.

“SKYCITY is pleased with progress made on the redesign of what will be an amazing landmark building, delivering significant economic benefits for both Auckland and New Zealand,” said Morrison.

“With arrangements still to be finalised, we have agreed with the Crown to extend the deadline for the review to the end of May.’’

The design for the convention center has faced setbacks following a cost blow out, which pushed the estimated cost of the convention center  from AUS$402 million ($300 million) to as high as $395 million. Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce said at the time the redesigned convention center might end up 10 percent smaller, "but no more than that."
