South Korea’s Jeju becoming China gambling mecca

South Korea’s Jeju Island, known locally as a honeymoon destination, is fast becoming a haven for Chinese gamblers, with casinos offering all inclusive packages to lure in high rollers, according to a Korean media report.
One casino offers free round-trip tickets and a room at a five-star hotel, while a Chinese interpreter and Chinese cooking are also part of the package, the Chosun Ilbo said.
Jeju's casinos have opened offices in China to tout for gamblers there. One agent has organized 53 gambling trips to Jeju for Chinese gamblers over the last two years.
Part of the reason for the surge in Chinese interest has been visa-free entry to Chinese citizens.
Genting Hong Kong recently said it will pay KRW130 billion ($117.2 million) to invest in a joint venture with China’s Landing International Development to manage a casino in the Hyatt Regency Hotel on the island.
While sister company, Genting Singapore has plans to develop a $2.2 billion integrated resort there, also with Landing. However, the plans stalled following a change in local government.
