State Duma adopts bill introducing higher tax for bookies

Russia’s State Duma has adopted a bill introducing a high tax rate for processing centers of online bookmakers and totes, reports Russian-language business daily Vedomosti.

According to the bill, online bookies will be required to pay 2.5 to 3 million rubles (US$37,600 to $45,000) starting from February 2017.

The document prepared by the Ministry of Finance which proposed increasing taxes tenfold was also supported by the Duma committee on budget and taxes. It has yet to pass two more readings in the State Duma and get an approval of President Vladimir Putin before it becomes a law.

This levy is about a hundred times higher than the current minimum tax on bookmakers and totes (from $25,000 to $125,000 from each processing centre accepting online bets).
