STB reports fall in gaming tourism spending

Singapore tourism receipts grew 12 percent year-on-year to S$11.6 billion ($8.2 billion) in the first half of 2016, according to the latest statistics released by the Singapore Tourism Board.

The growth was driven by strong growth of visitor arrivals in the six months, as well as increased spending on shopping, accommodation and beverage components.

The growth was somewhat stunted by a fall in Sightseeing, Entertainment & Gaming (SEG), which shrunk 17 percent to S$2.2 billion in the first half of 2016.

The performance of SEG was “due largely to the decline in gaming revenue as reported by the integrated resorts.”

The tourism board also noted it had observed a shift in its visitors’ profile, with an increase of tourists from China, Indonesia and India. China had the most notable change, increasing 55 percent year-on-year in 16H1.

On the other hand, Malaysia and Hong Kong posted year-on-year declines.
