Sydney council calls for cap on poker machine licenses

A Sydney council has become one of the first to call on the NSW state government to put a cap on poker machine licenses in its area, local media reports.

On Thursday, councillors from the Northern Beaches Council announced their support for the motion, calling for other councils in the state to do the same.

"The state government of both political persuasions has been addicted to poker machine revenue for too long now, it's causing great harm to the community," Liberal councillor Pat Daley told the AAP on Thursday.

"Half a million dollars a day is being wasted by people who in some cases can least afford it ... enough is enough."
