Taipei police take down cross-border gambling ring

Over 70 suspects involved in a cross-border online gambling ring have been arrested by Taipei City police on Thursday, local media reports.

According to the Taipei City Police Department (TCPD), a total of 76 suspects were apprehended after police received a tip off about the illegal operation operating in Taipei's Xinyi District and New Taipei's Banqiao District.

As part of the operation, foreign gamblers from Vietnam, Thailand Philippines, Myanmar and China would contact the Taiwan-based service to place bets on overseas illegal gambling websites - based mainly in China and Southeast Asia.

Police estimate as much as NT$1 billion (US$33.4 million) was placed in bets in just half a year.

Around 74 computers, six surveillance cameras and a number of account books were confiscated during the raid.

The suspects have been sent to Taiwan Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
