Tatts and Tabcorp win tax case

 

The Supreme Court of Victoria ruled in favor of a challenge by Tatts and Tabcorp to a combined A$84.6 million ($78 million) in levies the state sought from the two companies to fund hospitals and charities. The two successfully argued that they should not have been charged the health benefit tax for a full year as they lost their rights to operate gambling machines, which were subject to the tax, in places outside Crown Casino 46 days into the financial year. The court suggested the two should have to pay around A$7 million each instead.
