Tencent introduces checks aimed at limiting playtime of minors

Chinese video game giant Tencent is rolling out new checks aimed at restricting underage players from its popular games, Reuters reports.

On Thursday, Tencent announced on its Wechat account that it would introduce a real name-based registration system for new players for its Honor of Kings game, aimed at identifying and limiting playing of the game to minors.

The system will be linked to China’s public security database, and is the first of its kind in the Chinese gaming industry.

The new checks comes a week after calls from the China’s Ministry of Education to limit the number of online video games, and restrict play time, citing rising levels of myopia amongst Chinese children.

"Through these measures, Tencent hopes to continue to better guide underaged players to game sensibly," said the company on its official WeChat account.
