Tokyo mulls IR development in Odaiba Aomi area

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced a series of consultations with private companies over its tentatively-named “Tokyo Bay Area Vision,” which explicitly includes the possibility of an IR bid for the Aomi area of Odaiba.

The hearings are scheduled to run from January 20 to February 14, 2020.

The stated purpose of the hearings is to help the metropolitan government decide on its basic direction for coastal development after the conclusion of the 2020 Olympics.

Governor Yuriko Koike has sent mixed signals about whether or not she intends to enter into the IR race, which at this point would make Tokyo a direct rival to Yokohama.

Asked about the matter at a Metropolitan Assembly meeting on September 9, the governor stated, “There are both merits and demerits, and we are making a comprehensive examination.”

Aside from the Aomi district, the site of the former Tsukiji Fish Market is another location about which IR bid rumors have swirled.
