Tourism spending, visitor arrivals increase in 17H1

Singapore saw an increase in visitor arrivals and tourism spending in the first half of 2017, according to data from the Singapore Tourism Board.

Tourism receipts expanded 10 percent year-on-year, reaching S$12.7 billion (US$9.3 billion), whilst visitor arrivals increased 4 percent to 8.5 million visitors.

“The strong growth in 1H 2017 TR was due to the higher expenditure across all major components including Shopping, Accommodation, Food & Beverage, and Sightseeing, Entertainment & Gaming (SEG),” said STB.

Shopping remained the largest component of tourism spending, which made up of 25 percent of total tourism receipts in the second quarter of 2017. This was followed by accommodation spending, which made up 22 percent.

Spending on sightseeing, entertainment and gaming rose 5 percent, making up for 18 percent of spending.
