Tourist arrivals to Macau up 8 pct in April

Visitor arrivals to Macau in April rose 8 percent year-on-year, led once again by a rise in Mainland Chinese tourists, according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Visitors from Mainland China increased 16.5 percent year-on-year to 2.1 million in the month, with those traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) rising 16.9 percent. Most of these travelers came from the Guangdong and Hubei region, according to the data.

The SAR also recorded growth in visitors from Taiwan and USA. However, visitors from South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada and the UK decreased.

With the Macau-Zhuhai-HK bridge to open later this year, it was interesting to note that visitor arrivals by land grew 14.4 percent in the month, while visitors arrivals by sea fell 5.6 percent. Those arriving by air surged 25.9 percent.

The numbers have pushed total visitor arrivals for the first four months of the year to 11.5 million, up 8.4 percent year-on-year.
