Sihanoukville casinos ask to reopen

Casinos in Sihanoukville have presented a request to reopen their doors following the lifting of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, the Phnom Penh Post reports.

The newspaper cited Preah Sihanouk Provincial Hall spokesman Kheang Phearum as saying that 21 casinos are asking to open. If approved the requests will be sent to the national government for review.

All casinos have had to suspend their operations since April 1 and although Prime Minister Hun Sen said the properties would be allowed to operate from July 3, so far only NagaCorp’s Nagaworld has done so.

The properties need an inspection from the Ministry of Health to ensure they have put adequate Covid-19 protections in place.

Donaco International on Wednesday said it expects to reopen its Star Vegas property in the next few weeks after a Ministry of Health inspection.

Cambodia has fared better than most other nations when it comes to coronavirus infections, with just 226 reported figures and no deaths, if official statistics are accurate.
