Victorian ATM ban helps problem gamblers

A trial on the ban of ATMs at gaming venues by the Victorian Coalition government has been a success, said Minister for Liquor and Gaming Regulation, Edward O'Donohue, earlier this week.  The government released a report conducted independently by researchers at Swinburne University, which concluded that 

the removal of cash machines from gaming venues had been beneficial not only for problem gamblers but also for recreational gamblers and those at risk.  It was found that, on average, problem gamblers were spending $90 less at each hotel visit and $43 less at each club visit.  The removal of the machines also reduced the frequency with which high spend problem gamblers withdrew money over and above the amount they had originally planned to spend.
