Vietnam arrests 28 in illegal lottery ring

Police in South Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City have arrested 28 people involved in an illegal lottery ring, seizing more than $94,000 in cash, local media reported. The kingpin was said to be 36-year-old Nguyen Ngoc Thang, who had served three convictions for mugging, robbery and causing public nuisance. According to investigators the ring was operating an illegal numbers game based on the state lottery that allows players to gamble any amount they desire for payouts of up to 80 times the original bet. Police also seized seven ATM cards, a saving book, 30 fax machines, 23 computers and 47 cell phones, the report said.
