Vietnam police bring down $26 million gambling ring

Vietnamese police on Tuesday announced it has taken down a US$26 million gambling ring, arresting 10 people and seizing guns and cash, local media reports.

Officials on Tuesday said that the ringleaders ran websites offering sports betting and other forms of gambling, attracting hundreds of online gamblers since July.

"We arrested seven people and three others turned themselves in. The investigation is still ongoing to see if anyone else is involved," said a police source.

The ringleaders also reportedly offered high-interest loans and could collect debts using force.

It is understood that the police are now investigating a massive illegal betting ring worth US$422 million - involving more than 100 people including former and current state officials.
