Vietnam needs to develop a casino and other high-end tourism services on the central island of Ly Son and an islet off its coast, a senior Vietnamese banker was reported as saying in local media.
Tran Bac Ha, chairman of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam, made the comments after the regions were connected to the national power grid.
He said the 69-hectare Be Island should be set aside for a "high-end entertainment area," with five-star hotels and casinos to attract tourists for long holiday visits.
He said Ly Son could become the "silver island of the central region in a near future.”
Ly Son and Be islands comprise some 10 square kilometers of land sitting 15 nautical miles off the coast of Quang Ngai Province, also home to Vietnam's sole refinery, Dung Quat.
The island is located near to Dung Quat Economic Zone and plays an important economic and national security role.
In August, the Ministry of Finance submitted a draft decree to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung that proposed opening casinos to locals aged 21 and up. Vietnam's casinos are currently only open to foreign passport holders.
