Vietnamese PM approves new site for Phu Quoc resort

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a new location for the multi-billion-dollar casino resort on Phu Quoc Island off mainland Kien Giang Province, according to local media.

The complex will be developed in Bai Dai Ecotourism Area in Ganh Dau Commune instead of Bai Thom Commune, according to a development plan for Phu Quoc that was approved by the Prime Minister last week, Vietnamnet reported.

The prime minister’s decision comes several months after the Ministry of Construction’s proposal for a new location to make it easy to find investors for the recreational project. 

The complex is expected to comprise luxury hotels with 3,000 rooms, a conference center and a casino having 200-400 live tables and 2,000 gaming machines. Investors should spend at least US$4 billion on the project.

Spanning an area of 583.23 square kilometers and with a population of 96,940, the island district is a special administrative economic zone, an international luxury eco-tourism and entertainment site and a regional financial centre.

On September 17, 2014, the PM issued a decision to recognize the Phu Quoc island district as a second-tier urban area.
