Visitor arrivals and spending hits two year record high

Visitor arrivals and tourism receipts in Singapore reached a two-year record high in 2017, with strong flows observed China, India and Indonesia, according to the Singapore Tourism Board.

The results were announced by the body on Monday, noting that India and China saw the highest visitor growth rate in the year. Overall arrivals to Singapore increased by 6.2 percent to 17.4 million.

According to preliminary estimates from STB, visitor spending also increased in the year, with tourism receipts rising 3.9 percent to S$26.8 billion (US$20.3 billion).

STB said the growth in tourism receipts from China and the UK was attributed to an increase in leisure visitors, as well as higher spending on shopping.

The tourism authority said it was “generally optimistic” about tourism prospects for 2018 - forecasting visitor arrivals to be in the range of 17.6 to 18.1 million, while tourism receipts will look to grow to S$27.1 to S27.6 billion.
