World expo to ask Osaka govt to hold off on IR openings

The world expo body is planning to ask the Japanese government not to open any integrated resorts with casinos in Osaka during Expo 2025, according to sources close to the matter.

In a report from Mainichi, Osaka Hirofumi Yoshimura reportedly said he was in favor of opening a resort ahead of the expo.

"I'm assuming the Bureau [of International Expositions, BIE] is of the view that an extravagant grand opening of an integrated resort right next to the Expo site is undesirable. I think it's all right to open such a resort before the Expo."

While the desire is there, last week during a press conference, Osaka Mayor Ichiro announced that the government has given up on requiring any successful IR bidder to open up their IR before the expo and that in fact the bidders would only be asked to commit to an FY2026 opening date.

The decision came after concerns about the rushed construction deadline.
