Yumeshima likely to require Osaka police reorganization

In their current state, Osaka police are woefully underprepared for hosting the 2025 World Expo and an IR on the island of Yumeshima, and a significant police reorganization may be needed, the Sankei Shinbun has pointed out.

Currently, security for Yumeshima is provided by the Konohana Police Station, but no officers at all are permanently posted on the island. Instead, the police box at Universal Studios Japan, with a regular daily staff of only four police officers, patrol both Maishima and Yumeshima.

There is also a nearby police force at the Osaka Water Police Station, but it is housed in a decrepit building constructed in the mid-1960s, and they lack modern equipment.

The Sankei points out that Tokyo faced a similar issue about a decade ago when the Rinkai area underwent massive redevelopment. In that case, the old police station was closed down and the new Tokyo Wangan Police Station was established.

It is thought that Osaka could follow the same pattern and create its own “Osaka Wangan Police Station” to handle the new challenges that will arrive with massive populations coming and going from the currently undeveloped Yumeshima.
