241 people fined in Macau for smoking in first five months

241 people have been fined in Macau in the first five months of 2016 for smoking, according the latest statistics from Macau’s Health Bureau.

The number of people fined increased 36.2 percent compared to the same prior period in 2015 with the majority of those fined - 80.5 percent - being tourists.

A total of 200 site inspections were conducted between January and May, said the Bureau.

In October 2014, casinos were required to create enclosed smoking zones with negative pressure and ventilation systems, and banned smoking in mass market areas.

Recently, a full smoking ban bill, which proposes to prohibit smoking in all indoor areas of gaming venues, passed its first reading in the Legislative Assembly.

However, at the end of May, Macau’s Legislative Assembly voted in favor of smoking lounges as an alternative to a total smoking ban in the city’s gaming venues.
