3-star hotels most visited in March, despite price

Macau’s 3-star hotels posted the highest increased occupancy rate year on year in March, despite 4-star hotels offering the cheapest room rate, according to Macau Business quoting the MGTO.

Macau’s 4-star hotel room rates dropped 18.1 percent year on year, to MOP 711.1 (US$89) per night, while 3-star hotels were more expensive on average, at a room rate of MOP 831.8 per night.

Occupancy rates for 3-star hotels posted the highest increase, at 3.8 percent year on year to 86.8 percent.

Occupancy rates of local 4-star establishments reached 80.1 per cent last month – an increase of 1.1 per cent year-one-year.

Earlier this month, Macau’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) reported that Macau’s Tourist Price Index for the first quarter of 2016 decreased 6.7 percent year on year, mainly due to lower hotel rates.

According to the DSEC announcement, the price index of accommodation decreased the most significantly in the first quarter, down 23.8 percent year-on-year, followed by Entertainment and Cultural Activities, down 2.4 percent.
