Golden Week visitation met expectations: MGTO

The Macau Government Tourism Office said tourist visitation over Golden Week met expectations, attributed to the inauguration of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the rich diversity of local festivals and cultural events.

Overall visitation rose 11.5 percent year-on-year during Golden Week.

According to data, hotel bookings were also strong, with industry figures showing an average occupancy rate of 94 percent during Golden Week, an increase of 2 percentage points.

However, there was a decrease in the average room rate of hotel establishments, down 5.1 percent to MOP1,842.

While the entire week saw visitation rise, there was a 3.1 percent vistitation decline on the 7th day of Golden Week, reaching only 78,918 visitors.

The fall in visitors was mainly due to a 6 percent decrease in mainland visitor arrivals, which made up the majority of visitors to Macau during the seven day holiday.

Yesterday, analysts from Bernstein noted that VIP play was also tepid through Golden Week and is likely to remain so for the rest of the month as trade tensions pressure Mainland China’s economy.
