800,000 gambling and pornographic websites blocked

The Indonesian government reportedly blocked nearly 800,000 websites in the full year 2016, with most websites containing pornographic or gambling material, local media reports.

“Some 90 percent of them contained pornographic material or gambling applications, and some were simply spreading hoaxes,” said Samuel Abrijani Pangerapan, director general of Information Application at the Communications and Information Ministry, quoted by local media.

All forms of gambling, whether live or online are illegal in Indonesia. Punishments can be severe, with convicted gamblers imprisoned up to 10 years.
