Anti-casino movement appears in Tokoname

As the city of Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, takes its first steps toward a possible bid to locate an IR on Chubu Airport Island, the strongly anti-casino Japan Communist Party has begun mobilizing its local forces in opposition.

On Wednesday, three House of Representatives lawmakers who represent local constituencies paid a visit to the Aichi Prefectural Headquarters to seek an explanation of the prefectural government’s policy on seeking an IR. They urged the officials to gather the opinions of ordinary citizens before deciding to make a bid.

The Japan Communist Party delegation then made a tour of Chubu Airport Island itself, the proposed location of the IR, and spoke to local residents who are opposed to the notion.

House of Representatives lawmaker Nobuko Motomura declared, “We absolutely cannot permit these casinos that will create misfortunes for vulnerable people. I will use all of my strength in the Diet to prevent it from happening.”

The Tokoname City Council appealed in July for the prefecture’s support to build an IR on Chubu Airport Island, but Governor Hideaki Omura has yet to commit to the project.
