Australia eyes uniform approach to online gambling tax

Australia is considering a nationally consistent approach to online gambling taxes, in a move that will see wagering businesses face higher tax bills, local media reports.

Last week, Treasurer Scott Morrison agreed to work with state and territory counterparts in order to examine the prospect of introducing a uniform point-of-consumption tax across Australia.

"This is a very important issue, both from a revenue perspective but, frankly, more importantly, from a social perspective," Mr Morrison said, quoted by AFR.

Currently, wagering taxes are being funnelled to the Northern Territory, where most of Australia’s wagering operators have based their operations.

A “nationally consistent approach” will force wagering profit back into higher taxing jurisdictions by taxing where the punter is betting from, rather than where the betting operator is located.
