Boracay island works could complete ahead of schedule

Boracay Island could see its rehabilitation works complete ahead of schedule, according to the Department of Tourism.

During an interview with ABS CBN News Channel on Monday, Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo said she expects the rehabilitation of Boracay island to finish within four months, rather than the previously estimated six months.

“I’m working on three to four months… Though Secretary (Eduardo) Año is saying six months… I think [it will take] four months if the people in Boracay will cooperate with us,” she said.

Teo said the department has set the closure of the island during the dry season so they could work faster.

The shutdown of the island for works is set to take effect on April 26, and will forbid any tourism on the island.

In March, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. announced it had given a provisional license for a $500 million IR to be built by Macau’s Galaxy Entertainment Group.

The plans were shot on Wednesday after a spokesman for President Rodrigo Duterte confirmed there Galaxy Entertainment will not be allowed to build its planned $500 million integrated resort on the island.
