Cairns tourism mega-project headed for public consultation

The plan to develop a global tourism hub in Cairns has moved one step closer, with the project now being taken to public consultation, local media reports.

The favored spot for the tourism hub, which includes a casino, is at the Cairns City Port precinct, noted Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones.

However, Jones said that while the project is an exciting proposition for the region, the government would not proceed without feedback from locals.

“We’ve seen the benefits of the $3 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane project and a global tourism hub in Cairns would deliver much needed tourism infrastructure for North Queensland,” she said.

Aside from the public, the government is also planning to engage with Cairns Regional Council as well as representatives from the tourism, property and development industries, said Jones.

“A global tourism hub in Cairns, if chosen, would integrate with the state’s project to expand the Cairns Convention Centre.”
