California quakes shake up Las Vegas

Two major earthquakes in California in the past week reminded Las Vegas, which was well within the zone of impact, that earthquake preparation remains an important part of securing public safety in the IR industry.

The two earthquakes' epicenters were in California's Mojave Desert, a 6.4-magnitude temblor on Thursday followed by a 7.1-magnitude quake on Friday. Although they were too far from Las Vegas to cause serious damage on this occasion, they were a reminder that Nevada is also an area that experiences major earthquakes, and next time the epicenter could be much closer and the impact graver.

For example, the 6.0 magnitude Wells Earthquake in February 2009 caused an estimated US$11 to US$15 million of damage.

IR operators and other businesses in Nevada are being encouraged by both public officials and NGOs to review their earthquake emergency plans so as to ensure public safety in the event of a more serious temblor in the Las Vegas region.
