Canidrome gets one-year contract renewal

The government has renewed the Macau Canidrome's concession until the end of next year, TDM Macau reported.

According to the Official Gazette, the Canidrome's exclusive contract, which was scheduled to expire by the end of the year, has been renewed until December 31 next year.

The decision would likely come as a disappointment to Macau Canidrome acting chairwoman and lawmaker, Angela Leong, who had suggested that the government extend the greyhound racing concession by two or three years.

She said that would be enough time to upgrade its racetrack facilities and add new features.

A Fai Chi Kei residents association says the ruling is reasonable and pointed out that the government still has to wait for the outcome of a study commissioned to the University of Macau before it decides on the long-term fate of the Canidrome.

"The government has renewed the contract of the Canidrome for one year. I find this is reasonable. It's because in the near future, they still have to carry out many opinion polls and other matters. We hope that a year later, the government will consider different perspectives after balancing the interest of different sectors of the community,' Cheang Kam Hong, head of the Fai Chi Kei Neighborhood Mutual Help Association, was quoted by TDM as saying.
