Canidrome hopes to continue operations, despite no solid plan

Greyhound racing operator Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome Co. says it hopes to continue its dog racing activities despite not yet concluding a plan for its future, Macau Business Daily reports.

“We haven’t come to a decision. We will announce to the public once we have one. But we’re still studying [the issue]. Of course, we hope to continue the operation,” said managing director and deputy president Angela Leong On Kei on the sidelines of SJM’s cocktail reception for National Day.

In July, the Macau government gave the operator until July 21, 2018 to relocate if it wants to continue running the dog racing operations.

However, Leong noted the the difficulty of the company finding a new site to relocate the business. “It’s not easy to obtain a plot of land in Macau. That’s also the reason we haven’t come to a conclusion,” she said.

Macau Yat Yuen Canidrome, the region’s only greyhound race track saw a decline in profits of 82 percent to MOP 4.8 million (US$600,600) in 2015, according to the company’s year-end financial report.

The results represent a steep drop compared to its annual profit of MOP 26.7 million in 2014.

Locals and experts have called for the closure of Macau Canidrome, saying it is outdated and unprofitable.

The current concession of Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome will expire at the end of the calendar year.
