Casino champions Kep’s biggest ever beach clean up

The biggest ever clean-up of Kep’s Angkol Beach took place last month, masterminded by the management of nearby Ha Tien Vegas Entertainment Resort.

At least 220 volunteers, representing 40 percent of the casino’s workforce, spending October 29 gathering 10 tons of rubbish from the 1km stretch of Kep’s coastline.

More than 700 bags of trash were ultimately hauled away in 12 trucks for proper disposal.

Led by general manager Pieter Henning, the casino joined forces with the governor of Kep Province, the director of Kep’s Environment Department, and the local government, which brought along an additional 50 volunteers.

“Working closely with our local community and providing the local government with such help is a vital aspect to our responsibilities here in Cambodia”, said Henning.

Henning’s sentiments were echoed by the casino’s managing director, Rhys Jones, who said: “Not only did this day prove to be a positive event for the local environment, it was also a great team-building exercise for all our employees and management.”

Cambodia is known for its marine treasures, which include pristine coral reefs and sightings of rare pelagic giants, such as the whale shark. As such, the casino hopes this year’s social-responsibility event will be the first of many: not just in Cambodia, but across Southeast Asia.

Such was the scale of the community based clean-up that it drew attention from across the country, including positive coverage by TV channels Hang Meas HDTV, CTN, Bayon TV and TV3. Reports also featured in Khmer newspapers Koh Santepheap, Kampuchea Thmey, and Rasmei Kampuchea.
