Casino debate impacts pachinko industry agenda

Leaders of Japan’s pachinko industry are recognizing that increased public attention to the casino debate is putting them on the firing line for gambling addiction issues.

At a general meeting of the Kyoto Pachinko and Pachislot Cooperative Association on May 30, Chairman Shoichi Shirakawa told the gathering, “The longer that the casino debate continues, the greater the various burdens being put on our industry. Dealing with dependency issues is one of these burdens, but as pachinko is a familiar and casual entertainment for the people, this is also a chance for us to make our stance clear to society.”

Although pachinko is not classified under Japanese law as a form of gambling, all studies of gambling addiction agree that pachinko currently plays the overwhelmingly dominant role in producing the nation’s problem gamblers.
