Catholic priests vow to oppose Boracay casino

Catholic priests on the Philippine island of Boracay have vowed to oppose plans by Galaxy Entertainment to build a $500 million IR on the island, according to local media.

Father Jose Tudd Belandres of the Most Holy Rosary Parish, told media that church leaders in the province have been consistent in campaigning to make Boracay a family destination.

"A wholesome family destination and gambling will never be a good combination," said the priest.

Galaxy confirmed earlier this week that it is in talks with local partner Leisure and Resorts World to build a resort on the island, famed for its white sand beaches.

“As you know, China’s relationship with the Philippines has been improving. K Wah Group and Galaxy would like to play a role in the One Belt One Road initiative and we strongly believe the Philippines has great potential and offers attractive opportunities,” Francis Lui, deputy chairman of Galaxy, told Reuters in an email.
