China to block VPN services from Feb 1

Chinese citizens will have a harder time accessing restricted sites after the Chinese government ordered a block on VPN services, Bloomberg reports.

China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom are among the firms ordered by the government to bar individuals from the use of VPNs by February 1, 2018.

VPNs until now have been popular with citizens to skirt China’s “Great Firewall”, which bans access to websites including Facebook, Youtube and Google.

The new directive will  likely also affect access to online gambling, which is blocked in China.
