Chinese lottery sales down in August

China's lottery sales amounted to RMB28.09 billion ($4.4 billion) in August, down 10.9 percent year on year, Xinhua reported citing official data.

The first eight months of 2015 saw about RMB242.8 billion worth of lottery tickets sold, a year-on-year drop of 1.8 percent, the Ministry of Finance announced.

Welfare lottery sales increased by 0.4 percent year on year to RMB133.4 billion in the first eight months, while sports lottery sales dropped 4.2 percent to RMB109.4 billion. Figures last year were skewed by a boom in sales linked to the FIFA World Cup, held in Brazil.

Lottery sales in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region rose by RMB1.22 billion from a year ago, while Henan, Fujian, Hebei and Shandong provinces also posted large increases, according to the MOF.

Under lottery management rules, money from ticket sales must cover administrative fees and public welfare projects as well as the jackpot.
