Chinese tourist spend up 12 pct in 2016

Chinese overseas tourist spending increased once again last year, reaching US$261 billion, according to figures released by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

International tourism expenditure grew by $11 billion to $261 billion, an increase of 12 percent.

Outbound travel also increased in the year, increasing 6 percent to 135 million in 2016, according to the data.

“This growth consolidates China’s position as number one source market in the world since 2012, following a trend of double-digit growth in tourism expenditure every year since 2004,” said UNWTO.

In Asia-Pacific, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Thailand saw the most benefit from increased outbound travel, long-haul destinations such as United States and several countries in Europe also saw benefit, said the organization.
