Crown Sydney receives conditional planning approval

Crown Resorts has received conditional approval for the construction of its Crown Sydney Hotel Resort at Barangaroo South, according to a filing to the Australian Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

The NSW Planning Assessment Commission made the call, which includes approval of the modifications to Barangaroo’s concept plan.

“This is an extremely important day for Crown,” said owner James Packer, quoted by local media.

“It has taken us four years of constant effort to get to this point and now we can begin building our vision, to give Sydney one of the world’s great luxury hotels.”

However, Crown chief executive officer Rowen Craigie said that the approvals are subject to a number of substantial modifications and conditions which are being reviewed.

These conditions include increasing the size of a public park, widening a public promenade and allowing public access to a viewing platform on the 65th floor of the casino tower.

Crown Resorts chairman Robert Rankin said “While it has been a long and detailed process, we are pleased with the overall outcome and we’re deeply committed to building a six-star hotel resort that Sydneysiders and all Australians can be proud of.

Rankin said they expect to complete construction and open in early 2021.
