Customer experience workshop highlights speed and security needs

At a lunch workshop hosted by global content delivery network (CDN) provider Limelight Networks in Manila on Tuesday, Jaheer Abbas highlighted the need for quality control in an increasingly rich media environment. The workshop was attended by a select number of local gaming operators.

The theme of the workshop was improving the customer experience in a digital gaming world. Abbas, regional director for SE Asia for Limelight Networks, pointed to a number of global trends: a migration of applications, IT services and data to the cloud; explosive growth in the consumption of media on mobile and increasing Android penetration; the consumption of 4K quality media across multiple platforms; and increased concern about security and data privacy among today’s operators.

Abbas noted that for companies distributing casino game mobile applications, live event streaming, and providers of live dealer games, high-speed multi-device delivery was essential and that a cloud-based CDN could provide accelerated websites and robust security.

He also suggested that the cost of a customer leaving due to site outages caused by distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks could be as much as $40,000 per hour, and that as many as 45 percent of organizations are subjected to DDOS attacks. However, the fastest-growing and most successful attack campaigns in terms of number of breaches are web application (WAF) attacks. A WAF solution that sits behind the CDN and in front of the origin server provides effective monitoring, alerts and protection.

Workshop attendees were also privileged to hear from master licensor First Cagayan Leisure & Resorts Corporation president, Francis Hernando, on the current situation concerning the licensing of offshore gaming operators in the Philippines. Hernando said that, although regulator and operator PAGCOR had issued 35 POGO licenses, it was unclear whether these applied to BPOs as well as operators and sub-licensees, and how these different entities would be treated.

Hernando noted that PAGCOR has said it can review its licensing rules in six months and that the situation was still very fluid. He hoped that the two entities could cooperate in the future. In the meantime Cagayan Economic Zone is enhancing its infrastructure including refurbishing the airport runway and building housing, as well as housing its main data center there, operated by LR Data.
