DICJ to tighten junket requirements by 2018

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau will soon be tightening its regulation of gaming promoters, said director Paulo Martins Chan on the sidelines of a gaming conference in Macau last week, MDT reports.

Calls for tighter requirements for junket promoters have been made throughout the year, with the most recent comments made by the president of the Association of Gaming & Entertainment Promoters of Macau, Kwok Chi Chung, who called for a higher minimum deposit to gain the status of a junket promoter.

Chan said the regulations will “definitely enter the legislation process next year.”

It is understood that the government is looking to propose a higher capital deposit for licensed casino junkets.

Lawyer Jorge Neto Valente, who was a guest speaker at the conference said the tighter regulations would be a positive development for the industry.

“I think it was time for the junkets’ activity to be controlled, at least at a minimum. It was not good for the development of the activity, nor for the government or society, to [let it run wild] for so many years, but it’s better now than never,” Valente told local media.

“No one can say the gaming promoters are out of this race or the current licensed ones are going to keep their license. The truth is, if there’s a tender, the gaming promoters can apply for it,” he continued.
